📌 How is JEE Main Percentile Calculated?
JEE Main percentile is calculated by NTA using the formula: Percentile = (N ≤ you / Total N) × 100, where N is the number of candidates. It is normalised across sessions — Session 1 and Session 2 each generate a separate percentile, and the best percentile across both sessions is used for merit ranking. NTA normalises marks across sessions of different difficulty levels using statistical equating. A 99 percentile means you scored better than 99% of all candidates. How JEE Main Percentile Works – Step by Step
The National Testing Agency (NTA) uses a percentile-based normalisation system for JEE Main because the exam is conducted in multiple sessions. Here's exactly how it works:
- Raw Score Calculation: Your JEE Main raw score is calculated as: (+4) for every correct answer, (-1) for every incorrect answer, and 0 for unattempted/numerical questions that are wrong. Total marks = out of 300 (90 questions × 4 = 360 would be max without negative marking).
- Session-wise Percentile: NTA calculates your percentile within your specific session (e.g., Session 1, Morning Shift). If 5,00,000 students appeared in your slot and you ranked 5,000th, your percentile = (4,95,000/5,00,000) × 100 = 99.0 percentile.
- Multi-session Normalisation: NTA uses statistical methods to equate percentiles across sessions of different difficulty. A score of 200 in an easy paper and 180 in a tough paper might give the same percentile after normalisation.
- Best of Sessions: If you appear in both Session 1 and Session 2, NTA takes the better of the two percentiles as your final percentile for merit list purposes.
- AIR Calculation: All students across India are ranked by percentile (descending) to generate the All India Rank (AIR) merit list. Ties are broken by NTA's established tie-breaking rules (Age, then proportion of correct/incorrect).
⚡ Key Point: JEE Main percentile is NOT the same as percentage of marks. A student scoring 60% marks (180/300) may get 95+ percentile if others scored lower. Percentile reflects your position among all candidates, not your absolute score.
